How to Clean Decorative Switch Wall Plates

House Cleaning Day

So, it’s housecleaning day. You’re all set and armed with your trusty bucket of cleaning supplies, and you decide start on the dining room first. You wipe down the baseboards and spray and scrub the windows. Next come the table and chairs. You’ve got the room sparkling by the time you get to the fan, and when you’re ready to walk out, you reach out to hit the lights. That’s when you remember that you have to clean your light switch plates.

A Few Fingerprints

Light switch plates may seem like a relatively unimportant part of your decor in the grand scheme of things, but leave a few smudged fingerprints on a formerly shiny brass plate in a clean room, and you’ll see that the plate starts to stick out like a sore thumb. How exactly do you clean this ever-present item that shows up in pretty much every room of the house? You devote a special process to it, of course, to make sure it gets done right without taking too much of your valuable cleaning time. Here’s how.

Beyond Sensibility

First, decide on your weapon of choice. Will you use a paper towel or a microfiber towel? The paper towel is probably the easiest thing to reach for, and you have the convenience of being able to toss it in the trash can after you’re done using it. However, you need to consider the fact that it may “shed.” Tiny fibers might not be a big problem on white ceramic wall plates, but they will show up on brass. Therefore, you may want to go with a microfiber towel. These soft towels are designed to clean without leaving anything behind. You shouldn’t actually spray the switch, so go to your fuse box and turn off the circuit breaker where you’ll be cleaning the plate. Make sure the electricity is actually off by using a circuit alert tester. Then, remove the plate with a screwdriver, spray your cloth with your chosen cleaner and wipe away all smudges. You can then spray some cleaner on your cloth to clean the switch. Do not spray your cleaner on the switch, even if the electricity is off. Finally, after everything has dried, replace the plate and turn the electricity back on. So, remember, when shopping for wall plates decor online, make sure you know how you’re going to clean them.
