You’ll need just a few things to tackle this DIY project:
- The plates you’re replacing
- A flat head screwdriver
- Utility knife
- Knowledge of your breaker box
Steps to Replace Your Switch Plate
You’ll want to start by turning off the electricity to the room that you’re changing the wall switch in first. Turning off your breaker will help to keep you safe. You’ll also want to make sure that the switch is in the off position before you get started.
Remove the screws from the old plate using the screwdriver. You may find that it quickly comes off the wall exposing the inner workings of the switch, but it doesn’t always do so.
Paint around the plate may have acted like glue. In this case, you’ll want to carefully use the utility knife around the edges to loosen it up. Go around the edges lightly so that you’re able to get through any layers of paint. Once you’ve made it all the way around, you should be able to remove the old plate without damaging the surrounding paint.
Place the new switch plate up on the wall, and screw it into place.
Turn your electricity back on, and try out your new switch.
